BROTHERS OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF BELLEY. – They were founded in 1835 at Belmont by Gabriele Taborin for the instruction and education of the young and to prepare suitable personnel for service in the parishes. For this purpose, on certain days special lessons in singing and sacred liturgy are given.
The Institute initially consisted of laymen, but priests were later also admitted to meet the spiritual needs of the houses. It was approved by Gregory XVI by a brief dated 29 August 1841. After the mother house was transferred to Belley, other foundations soon followed in various cities of France. Because of the laws suppressing religious Congregations, they were forced into exile and established the mother house with a novitiate and a flourishing student residence at Chieri, near Turin. At present, 600 religious live in 27 houses.
