BROTHERS OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF BELLEY. — They were founded in 1835 at Belmont by Gabriel Taborin for the instruction and education of youth and to prepare suitable members for service in parishes. For this purpose, special lessons in singing and sacred liturgy are given on certain days.
At first the Institute consisted of laymen, but later priests were admitted to attend to the spiritual needs of the houses. It was approved by Gregory XVI with a brief of 29 August 1841. After the motherhouse was transferred from Belley, other foundations soon followed in various cities of France. Due to the anti-clerical laws against religious congregations, they were forced into exile and established the motherhouse with a novitiate and a flourishing studentate at Chieri, near Turin. At present, there are 600 religious living in 27 houses.
