BROTHERS OF CHARITY. — A religious congregation founded in Ghent in 1807 by Canon P. J. Triest. The exercise of charity to which the Brothers are devoted is expressed in the care of the sick, the elderly, and the mentally ill, and in the education of young people. Approved by Leo XIII in 1899, the Congregation is widespread in Belgium, Holland, England, and Canada, with more than 2,600 religious in 80 houses.
