FRUSTA, LA. - Roman illustrated periodical, founded and directed by the lawyer Carlo Marini (1843-1913). It came out three times a week on 20 Nov. 1870; a daily the following year, it enlarged its format in 1873. Notable for its heated articles against the "buzzurri" or "usurpers of Rome," as well as for the great space given to the Roman vernacular in endless prose and verse (anonymous but by Marini) against those same people. It had capable editors in Filippo Tolli, Pietro Durantini, Scipione Fraschetti. Cardinal Parocchi and various future cardinals collaborated with it: Massaja, Zigliara, Capecelatro, Schiaffino, Tripepi, Alimonda, Nocella, Jacobini.
Well made for its times, it liked to outdo its fellows in some publication, as it did for the first encyclical of Leo XIII. It conducted memorable campaigns, obtaining, for example, the breaking of the contract by which the Iberian Crown was selling S. Giacomo degli Spagnoli to the Protestants. Extortions of the treasury, 64 seizures, convictions, never made any impression on Marini. The periodical nevertheless succumbed, while he and Giuseppe Amori were founding the semiweekly La nuova frusta (6 June 1875).
