FRUSIUS (DES FRIUX), ANDRÉ. - Humanist Jesuit, b. at Chartres at the beginning of the 16th century, d. 26 Oct. 1556.

A man of letters and a scholar, knowledgeable in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, he translated the Spiritual Exercises into Latin, thereby providing the editio vulgata. In 1547, together with St. Peter Canisius, he went to the College of Messina, where he taught Greek, lectured on St. Paul and devoted himself to the reform of the Sicilian clergy. Rector of the College of Venice in 1551, he moved in 1553 to that of Rome, continuing always in teaching, and was also rector of the German College.

He did not for this reason neglect his humanistic aptitudes, writing Latin epigrams and dialogues, preparing editions of the classics ad unguem, and composing a Latin syntax and a kind of stylistics: De utraque copia verborum et rerum praecepta, in verse.
