GÉNICOT, EDOUARD. - Jesuit, moral theologian, b. at Anversa on 18 June 1856, d. at Lovanio on 21 Feb. 1900. Following his inclination, he initially devoted himself to historical studies, preparing a completed work on Adriano VI (cf. Un pape belge, in Précis historiques, 2nd series, 8 [1879, 1], pp. 321-42; 10 [1880, 1], pp. 739-47). But from 1889 he was entrusted with the teaching of moral theology at the Jesuit scholasticate in Lovanio, where he remained until his death.
His work, Theologiae moralis institutiones (2 vols., Lovanio 1896), went through many editions and became almost the common manual of theological schools, constantly updated and subsequently adapted to the CIC by Fr. J. Salsmans (16th ed., Bruxelles 1946). Its merit lies in its great clarity of exposition, in the lucidity, balance, and soundness of its judgments, and in a conciliatory and well-enlightened wisdom. His Casus conscientiae appeared posthumously (2 vols., Lovanio 1901; 7th ed. Bruxelles 1938), displaying the same merits, combined with great practicality and timeliness of subject matter.
