GÉNICOT, ÉDOUARD. - Jesuit, moralist, b. at Antwerp on 18 June 1856, d. at Louvain on 21 Feb. 1900. Following his inclination, he first occupied himself with historical studies, preparing a complete work on Adrian VI (cf. Un pape belge, in Précis historiques, 2nd series, 8 [1879, 1], pp. 321-42; 10 [1880, 1], pp. 739-47). But from 1889 he was entrusted with the teaching of moral theology in the Jesuit scholasticate at Louvain, and he continued there until his death.

His work: Theologiae moralis institutiones (2 vols., Louvain 1896) went through many editions and became almost the common manual of theological schools, always kept up to date, and later adapted to the CIC by Fr. J. Salsmans (16th ed., Brussels 1946). Its merit lies in the great clarity of exposition, in the lucidity, judiciousness and sureness of its judgments, in a conciliatory and well-informed wisdom. His Casus conscientiae (2 vols., Louvain 1901; 7th ed. Brussels 1938) appeared posthumously, in which the same merits are noted, joined to a great practicality and timeliness of topics.
