GÉNICOT, EDOUARD. - Jesuit, moral theologian, b. at Antwerp on 18 June 1856, d. at Louvain on 21 February 1900. Following his inclination, he first devoted himself to historical studies, preparing a comprehensive work on Adrian VI (cf. *Un pape belge*, in *Précis historiques*, 2nd series, 8 [1879, I], pp. 321-42; 10 [1880, I], pp. 739-47). From 1889, however, he was entrusted with the teaching of moral theology in the Jesuit scholasticate at Louvain, a position he held until his death.
His work, *Theologiae moralis institutiones* (2 vols., Louvain 1896), went through many editions and became almost the standard manual in theological schools, continually updated and later adapted to the *Codex Iuris Canonici* by Fr. J. Salsmans (16th ed., Brussels 1946). Its merit lies in the great clarity of exposition, the lucidity, balance, and certainty of its judgments, and in a conciliatory and well-informed wisdom. After his death there appeared the *Causi conscientiae* (2 vols., Louvain 1901; 7th ed. Brussels 1938), which display the same qualities, combined with great practicality and timeliness of argument.
