GENOUDE, ANTOINE. - Polemicist priest, b. at Montélimar on 9 February 1792, d. at Hyères (Var) on 19 April 1849. Educated at the Seminary of St. Sulpice, he then devoted himself to journalism, reviving the Gazette de France and putting his considerable talent at the service of religion. Then, after his wife died in 1834, he had himself ordained a priest and to his activity as a writer he fruitfully added that of preacher. He was less fortunate when he was elected deputy to the Chamber, because from the political rostrum he expressed Gallican ideas.
Of his many works the following are worthy of mention: after translations of some books of the Old Testament (Isaiah [Paris 1815], Job [ibid. 1818], Psalms [ibid. 1819]), he published the entire Holy Scripture: Sainte Bible d'après les textes sacrés, avec la Vulgate (23 vols., ibid. 1820-24), very widespread and reprinted, but not free from inaccuracies; La raison du christianisme, ou preuves de la religion tirées des écrits des plus grands hommes (12 vols., ibid. 1834-35); Les Pères de l'Eglise (French trans., 7 vols., ibid. 1835-49).
