GENOUDE, ANTOINE - ETIENNE de. - Polemical priest, b. at Montélimar on 9 Feb. 1792, d. at Hyères (Var) on 19 Apr. 1849. Educated at the Seminary of S. Sulpizio, he subsequently devoted himself to journalism, reviving the Gazette de France and placing all his effective talent
at the service of religion. Then, after the death of his wife in 1834, he had himself ordained priest and profitably added the activity of preacher to that of writer. He was not so fortunate when elected deputy to the Chamber, because from the political tribune he expressed Gallican ideas.
Among his many works, the following remain worthy of mention: after translations of certain books of the Old Testament (Isaia [Paris 1815], Giobbe [ibid. 1818], Salmi [ibid. 1819]), he published the entire Holy Scripture: Sainte Bible d'après les textes sacrés, avec la Vulgate (23 vols., ibid. 1820-24), widely circulated and reprinted, but not free from inaccuracies; La raison du christianisme, ou preuves de la religion tirées des écrits des plus grands hommes (12 vols., ibid. 1834-35); Les Pères de l'Eglise (French trans., 7 vols., ibid. 1835-49).
