GERHARD, JOHANN. - German Protestant theologian, b. at Quedlinburg on 17 Oct. 1582, d. at Jena on 17 Aug. 1637. Having undertaken theological studies at the University of Wittenberg in 1599 in fulfillment of a vow, he interrupted them to study medicine, returning nonetheless in 1603 with great profit to theology at Jena. Appointed by Duke John Casimir of Coburg superintendent at Heldburg (1606), he later became superintendent general of all the Lutheran Churches of the duchy, for which he also compiled a regulation that remained long in use.
In 1616 he was called to teach theology at the University of Jena, where he then remained always. G. was considered the greatest theologian of his times, and this explains the great prestige he enjoyed among the German Protestant princes, as well as the repeated invitations from all the German universities. Among his works, many of which still lie in manuscript in the Library of Gotha, are to be remembered: Methodus studii theologici (1600), Loci communes theologici (9 vols., Jena 1610-22), the most important, and Meditationes sacrae (Leiden 1637).
