CORNUBIENSIS, Iohannes (John of Cornwall). - Theologian of the 12th century, d. ca. 1176. Little is known of his life; his place of origin is also uncertain, for which reason some consider him French, while others regard him as English. The only certain piece of information is that he studied in Paris at the school of Peter Lombard, of Robert of Melun and of Maurice of Sully.
Of the writings attributed to him, the Eulogium ad Alexandrum papam III, quod Christus sit aliquis homo (PL. 199, 1041-86) is incontestably his, in which he combats the doctrines of Abelard, of Gilbert de la Porrée and of Peter Lombard, who upheld the christological nihilism (according to which the humanity of Christ was nothing but a vesture of the Word) condemned at the Council of Tours of 1163.
