GINOULHIAC, JACQUES-MARIE-ACHILLE. - Archbishop and theologian, b. at Montpellier on 3 Dec. 1806, d. there on 17 Nov. 1875. Ordainedpriest (1830), he taught philosophy in the diocesan seminary, then dogmatic theology. Chaplain of the convent of Providence (1837), vicar general of the archbishop of Aix (1839), in 1853 he was consecrated bishop of Grenoble, from which he passed to the archiepiscopal see of Lyon in 1870. He took part in the Vatican Council, at which he spoke several times. A convinced anti-infallibilist, after the definition he submitted loyally.
As bishop of Grenoble he circulated several letters and pastorals, among them notable ones on the conditions of the Papal State (1860), on Renan's Vie de Jésus (1863), and the one in defense of the encyclical of 8 Dec. 1864 and of the Syllabus (1865).
He wrote: Histoire du dogme catholique pendant les trois premiers siècles de l'Église et jusqu'au Concile de Nicée (Paris 1852; 2nd ed., ibid. 1866); of particular interest, Les épîtres pastorales, ou réflexions dogmatiques et morales sur les épîtres de St Paul à Timothée et à Tite (ibid. 1866); Le Concile œcuménique (ibid. 1869); Le sermon sur la montagne (Lyon 1872); Les origines du christianisme (posthumous, Paris 1878).
