GHISLANDI, Vittore, called Fra' Galgario. - Painter, a Minim friar, b. in Bergamo on 4 March 1655, d. there at the age of 88 in the first days of Dec. 1743. He is considered among the most distinguished Italian portraitists. His works in public and private collections throughout Europe show the master's intense capacity for characterization, expressed particularly in the Carrara Gallery in Bergamo through an extremely rigorous and lively drawing. He had several pupils and imitators, among whom a Minim friar is remembered, who died at only 22 years of age.
