GHISLERI, MICHELE. — Theologian and exegete, born in Rome in 1563, died there on 27 June 1646. A religious of the Theatine Order (1584), he was a pupil of Antonio Agellio, from whom he learned the Oriental languages and a great love for Holy Scripture, of which he became an outstanding scholar. Friend and confessor of Giovanni Battista Vives, he inspired the pious prelate with the idea of an international college for missions (the germ of the College of Propaganda).
Principal work: *Commentarii in Canticum* (Rome 1600) with an ecclesiological-Marian interpretation.
