GHISLERI (CONSIGLIERI), PAOLO. - Born in Rome in 1499 to Bartolomeo and Maria De' Stati, and died there piously on 14 April 1557. An active member of the Oratory of Divine Love, he formed a friendship with Gian Pietro Carafa and, together with him, joined Saint Gaetano Thiene in founding the new Order of the Clerics Regular of the Theatines (14 September 1524).
When Carafa was created a cardinal by Paul III (1536), Ghisleri lived with him as a confrere and valuable collaborator in the affairs of the Reform and in preparing the return of the Theatines to Rome, from which they had departed during the Sack of Rome (1527). When Carafa himself became Pope Paul IV, he kept Ghisleri with him in the Vatican as his secret chamberlain and master of the chamber, and intended to elevate him "in pectore" to the purple of the cardinalate, an honor which Ghisleri declined, continuing to live in the rigorous Rule of the Theatines. He was also canon of the Vatican Basilica, and the Pope entrusted him with the task of restoring new splendor to divine worship there. He was honorably buried there by the will and at the expense of Paul IV himself.
