Goudin, Antoine

GOUDIN, ANTOINE. - Dominican philosopher and theologian, b. at Limoges ca. 1639, d. there on 25 Oct. 1695. He inaugurated his brilliant teaching career in the Convent of that same city, in which he had become a religious in 1657. More important was his subsequent teaching as an aggregated master of the Academy of Avignon, until 1669. At that date he became prior of the Convent of Brives, then was sent to Paris for theological teaching in the general novitiate. At the end of his life he was prior of S. Giacomo (Paris).

The fruit of his teaching at the Avignon Academy is that manual which even today can be consulted with profit: Philosophia iuxta inconcussa tutissimaque Divi Thomae dogmata tt. IV comprehensa (Lyons 1671; corrected and enlarged, Paris 1674). By 1692 it already counted 10 editions, and it was published several times even afterward. Less fortunate, on the other hand, were his: Tractatus theologici iuxta inconcussa tutissimaque dogmata Thomae Ag., Doctoris Angelici, 2 vols., Cologne 1723 (posthumous). A new edition was edited by A. Dummermuth (Louvain 1874). The cause of the lesser success of the theological treatises is perhaps to be sought in G.'s moderation on the theses most debated at that time, although he remains faithful to Thomism.
