**GUASTI, Cesare.** — Writer, born in Prato on 4 Sept. 1822, died in Florence on 12 Feb. 1889. After completing his classical studies in Prato as an external student at the Cicognini college under Giuseppe Silvestri, of whom he was a friend and biographer, he devoted himself to his father’s printing business and, while still very young, published philological works, including the *Trattato contro l’avversità della fortuna* of Arrigo Settimello (1841). In 1850 he was called to Florence as archivist of the Opera del Duomo, and four years later to the superintendency of the State Archives.
**GUASTALLA, Diocese of.** — City and diocese in the province of Reggio Emilia. It has an area of 319 sq. km. with 70,000 inhabitants, all Catholic, 29 parishes served by 73 diocesan priests and 8 regulars, one seminary, one male religious community and 33 female (1949).
