"IAM LUCIS ORTO SIDERE." - Hymn sung at the beginning of the hour of Prime, composed by an unknown author of the school of St. Ambrose, and therefore called Ambrosian. St. Benedict indeed says in his Rule: "inde sequitur ambrosianum" (ch. 12).

At the dawn of the new day, once the darkness of night has been put to flight, the prayer of the faithful rises to God as a means of obtaining help for the fulfillment of the day's duties and for avoiding those faults that bring such grave harm to the life of the spirit. For the grace of the Lord will be man's salvation; with it good works will be accomplished, and through it thoughts and works will be directed to God.
