Iam Christus Astra Ascenderat

"IAM CHRISTUS ASTRA ASCENDERAT." - It is the hymn of Matins on the feast of Pentecost, of Ambrosian origin.

The descent of the Holy Spirit in tongues of fire upon the Apostles gathered in prayer with the Most Holy Mary is amply narrated by St. Luke in chapter 2 of Acts. The poet draws inspiration from this narrative and brings into beautiful relief the descent of the Spirit and the action of St. Peter who, first among all, speaks a language unheard of among the humble fishermen of Galilee, heard by each in his own tongue.
