ILDIBAD, King of the Goths of Italy. - After Ravenna fell into the hands of the Byzantines through the action of Belisarius in May 540, the Goths of northern Italy, not yet occupied by the Greeks, elected as their king Uraia, nephew of the predecessor Vitiges, who declined the honor in favor of I., commander of the Gothic garrison of Verona and uncle of Totila.

Elected at Pavia, where he had a very small army, later increased by the Goths from other regions of northern Italy, he attacked and defeated near Treviso Vitalius, magister militum of Illyricum, and Visandus, king of the Heruli. But he soon alienated the minds of the Goths by having Uraia put to death; and a young Goth, a soldier of the bodyguard, also out of private vengeance, killed him during a banquet in June (?) of 641.
