**HIPPOLYTUS of PORTO,** Saint and Martyr. — He is commemorated in the *Martyrologium Hieronymianum* on 22 August 1624 as a martyr of Porto and identified with Nonnus, who is mentioned in the *Depositio martyrum* on 5 September.
There did indeed exist at Porto a church dedicated to him, destroyed by the Vandals around the middle of the 5th century, but no reliable document supports the account given by Jerome, except for the confused and corrupted *Passio sanctae Aureae* (BHL 808 ff.), according to which Nonnus—Hippolytus, after burying the martyr, presented himself before the vicar of Porto, Romulus, by whom he was ordered to be cast into a well near the Tiber and then buried not far away on 23 August. The Hippolytus “who is also called Nonnus” is a distinct person from the Roman Hippolytus, likewise venerated at Porto.
