IPPOLITO di PORTO, saint, martyr. - He is commemorated in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum on 22 Aug. as a martyr of Porto and identified with Nonno, remembered in the Depositio martyrum on 5 Sept.
There actually existed at Porto a church dedicated to I., destroyed by the Vandals around the middle of the fifth century, but no reliable document supports the notice of the Hieronymianum, except for the confused and corrupt Passio s. Aureae (BHL. 808 ff.), according to which Nonno-I., after burying the martyr, presented himself to the vicar of Porto, Romolo, who had him thrown into a well near the Tiber and subsequently buried not far away, on 23 Aug. I. “qui et Nonnus dicitur” is a person distinct from the Roman I., likewise venerated at Porto.
