HIPPOLYTUS OF PORTO, Saint, Martyr. - He is commemorated in the Martirologio geronimiano on 22 Aug. as a martyr of Porto and identified with Nonnus, remembered in the Depositio martyrum on 5 Sept.

There really existed at Porto a church dedicated to I., destroyed by the Vandals around the middle of the 5th century, but no document worthy of credence supports the notice of the Geronimiano, except the confused and corrupt Passio s. Aureae (BHL. 808 ff.), according to which Nonnus-I., after burying the martyr, presented himself to the vicar of Porto, Romulus, by whom he was thrown into a well near the Tiber, and then buried a little way off, on 23 Aug. The I. "qui et Nonnus dicitur" is a person distinct from the Roman I., also venerated at Porto.
