IRENAEUS, Saint, Martyr. - Bishop of Sirmium, he is commemorated on April 6 in the Hieronymian Martyrology, which records the true dies natalis.

There exists a very ancient Passio, worthy of belief and probably composed from the judicial protocols. According to it, I., still of young age, was bishop of Sirmium during the persecution of Diocletian. Brought before the tribunal of the governor of Pannonia, Probus, having refused to sacrifice, despite the prayers of relatives and friends, he was subjected to torments. Imprisoned, after a new interrogation he was condemned to beheading and his body thrown into the Sava, M. in 304. Entered in the Roman Martyrology on March 25.
