IRENE OF PORTUGAL, Saint, Martyr. - From the 7th century, commemorated on October 20 by the Roman Martyrology, her life presents legendary features. A nun in a monastery near Thomar (Portugal), she is said to have been beheaded by Britaldo, the local lord, who had been unable to bend her to sin. Her body, thrown into the Nabão, is said to have reached Scallabis, a Roman colony on the banks of the Tagus, by way of the Zezere, and from that time the town is said to have taken its name from her: Santarem (St. Irene). Her identification with St. Irene, martyr, companion of Agape and Chionia, is without foundation.
