IQUIQUE. - City and diocese of Chile, erected on 20 Dec. 1929 by Pope Pius XI with the apostolic constitution Ad gregem dominicum through the suppression of the apostolic vicariate of Tarapacà; it was first a suffragan of Santiago de Chile, now it is of La Serena.
The Cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. It has an area of 75,000 sq km and counts 115,000 inhabitants, of whom 110,000 are Catholics, gathered in 23 parishes, served by 9 diocesan priests and 28 regulars; it has 7 male religious communities and 6 female, and a seminary (1949).
