Also known as: hyssop; Latin: Hyssopus officinalis

ISSOP (Hebrew Ἔσοβή; Greek Ἄσωπος). - A small plant that was used for sprinkling in Hebrew rites.

Hyssop is already mentioned in Ex. 12:22, where the Israelite doors in Egypt are spoken of as sprinkled with the blood of the lamb. In particular it was used for the purification of the leper (Lev. 14:4) and for the water of purification (Num. 19:6, 18). For a metaphorical use of the term cf. Ps. 50:9. In John 19:29 there is agreement in seeing an erroneous reading, since it cannot be a question of hyssop.

Botanists do not agree on identifying this small plant. Linnaeus's Hyssopus officinalis has been considered, but, since it does not grow in Palestine, it has also been identified with Origanum Maru.
