ITALA. - Title by which the ancient Latin version of the Bible, earlier than the Vulgate (v.), was for a long time called. Now this terminology has been replaced by that of "ancient Latin versions" or Vetus latina, or by "pre-Jerome versions," because one cannot speak of a complete and homogeneous Latin translation of the Bible before St. Jerome (v. LATINE, VERSIONI della BIBBIA).
The designation I. appears only in an obscure text of St. Augustine, who, speaking of the biblical versions, states: "In ipsis autem interpretationibus, i. ceteris praeferatur, nam est verborum tenacior cum perspicuitate sententiae" (De doctrina christiana, II, 15, 22:
PL 34, 46). According to some, St. Augustine was indicating the superiority of the text circulating in Italy over the African one; according to others, with little plausibility, the new version of St. Jerome. Some, finally, consider the reading i. to be a corruption of illa, of unitata, or of Aquila, even supposing a lacuna in the text.
