Institute for Works of Religion (ISTITUTO PER LE OPERE DI RELIGIONE)

INSTITUTE FOR WORKS OF RELIGION. - Erected by His Holiness Pius XII on June 27, 1942, in Vatican City, for the purpose of providing for the custody and administration of capital and real estate transferred or entrusted to it and destined for works of religion and Christian piety.

Already Leo XIII, with the aim of safeguarding and administering the capital of pious foundations, had established, on Feb. 11, 1887, a cardinalitial Commission, under the name of Commission ad pias causas, and had approved a particular regulation, which remained in force until 1904, when Pius X, with a new regulation, gave the Commission ad pias causas the name of Cardinalitial Commission for the Works of Religion. New changes and supervening administrative needs induced His Holiness Pius XII to erect the new I. for the W. of R., with its own juridical personality, preserving the purpose of the previous administration, which was thus absorbed by the I.
