JANNINCK, Konrad. - Jesuit, Bollandist, born at Groningen on 16 Nov. 1650, died at Antwerp on 13 Aug. 1723. For some time assigned as an assistant to Frs. G. Henschen and D. Papebroch (1679-81), he then pursued theological studies at the Roman College and took advantage of his stay in Rome to collect hagiographical material. Returning to the Bollandist house in 1681, he worked on vols. 5 to 12 of the *Acta Sanctorum*, covering May to July; but various travels abroad and some spiritual ministries diverted him from more assiduous labour.
He played a principal part in defending Fr. Papebroch, who had been attacked by the Carmelites over the question of the origin of their Order from St. Elijah (*Acta SS. Aprilis*, 1, pp. 433-437), and on his journey to Rome to plead the cause—after the condemnation of the *Acta SS.* by the Inquisitions of Toledo, Saragossa, Madrid and Valladolid—he succeeded in preventing more severe condemnations.
