KAIBEL, GEORG. - German philologist and epigraphist, b. in Lubecca, 30 Oct. 1847; d. in Gottinga, 12 Oct. 1901. He was professor first at the University of Strasburgo and then at that of Gottinga.
He produced the edition, in 3 vols. (Lipsia, 1887–90), of the Deipnosofisti (“sophists or sages at a banquet”) by Ateneo di Naucrati (Egypt), of the imperial age, which constitutes a source of the greatest importance for knowledge of Greek culture in the Hellenistic period: it preserves fragments of Old and New Attic Comedy, writings by Greek historians, and a great number of notices on the most varied subjects. K. also began publication of the Comicorum Graecorum Fragmenta (Lipsia, 1899). He further edited the edition (the first German one) of Aristotle’s Res publica Atheniensium (Berlino, 1893), discovered in 1891 and first published in London in that same year, and subsequently again in Germany (Berlino, 1903; Lipsia, 1909). K.’s epigraphic work is represented by the Corpus inscriptionum Graecorum, the Inscriptiones Graecae, Siciliae et Italiae (Berlino, 1890), and the collection Epigrammata Graeca ex lapidibus conlecta (ivi, 1878).
