KAMPALA, VICARIATE OF. - It is entrusted to the Society of St. Joseph of Mill Hill for Foreign Missions and is located in the Uganda Protectorate (British East Africa), in the south-southwestern part of the former vicariate of the Upper Nile, from whose division (10 June 1948) it derives.

While the north-northeastern part of the territory continued to be called the apostolic vicariate of the Upper Nile, the south-southwestern part took the name of the apostolic vicariate of K., from the city which, forming a quid unum with the adjacent mission station of Nsambra, represents the center from which the Mill Hill Society, since its first arrival in that region of Africa, spread Catholicism in it. The vicariate of K. comprises a portion of the Kingdom of Buganda, that is, a part of the civil district of Mengo, and the civil district of Busoga. It is inhabited by the Baganda and Basoga tribes, who speak Luganda. It has an area of 16,226 sq km with a population, according to the statistics of 1947, of over 700,000 inhabitants, of whom over 100,000 are Catholics, 90,000 Protestants, 40,000 Muslims, and about 470,000 pagans. There are 9 native priests. The foreign missionaries are 50 priests and 5 lay brothers, the foreign sisters 63, the native sisters 85. The mission stations are 15; the teachers about 240; the schools 79. There is a minor seminary with 45 students and a major one with 47.
