LA FOSSE, JACQUES de. - Man of letters, b. in Paris on 25 Nov. 1621, d. at Sedan on 30 Apr. 1674. Admitted by St. Vincent into his Congregation, he was assigned to the teaching of letters in the Seminary of St. Charles. There, and then throughout his life, he composed several Latin poems, full of mythological allusions, which are also found in his religious compositions and in his Christian tragedies, "full of fire and of elevation." In 1656 La Fosse was sent to the Seminary of Marseilles, in 1658 to Troyes, in 1663 to Sedan, to hold his own there against the Protestant Academy.
Among the printed works are remembered: Joannis Frontonis memoria... celebrata (Paris 1663); In cruces solemniter depectas Sedani... odae (ibid. 1665); Praeceptiones ad vitam inter homines ex decoro eoque christiano instituendam (Toul 1665); Odae in Dominum Salvatorem nostrum et vivificam eius crucem (Châlons-sur-Marne 1667); In divum Franciscum Salesium super apotheosi consecratum odae panegyricae (Troyes 1668). Very numerous manuscripts of La Fosse are preserved in the National Library of Paris, at the Mazarine, at the Arsenal and in other French libraries.
