LANGUET, HUBERT (Hubertus Burgundus). - French statesman, b. at Vitteaux in Burgundy in 1518, d. at Antwerp on 30 Sept. 1581. Highly learned in law, theology, history and science, he traveled in Sweden, Italy, France and the Netherlands, remaining above all in contact with Melanchthon, whose pernicious influence he underwent. In 1547 he apostatized to Protestantism, and in the period 1560-77 he became diplomatic agent of the Elector of Saxony, first in France, then, from 1573, at the imperial court of Maximilian II, making himself a defender of the interests of the German Protestants.
Writings: Historica Descriptio susceptae a Caesarea Maiestate executionis contra Imperii Romani rebelles et captae urbis Gothae (Gotha 1567); Epistolae politicae et historicae ad Philippum Sydaeum (Frankfurt 1633); Epistolae ad Joachim Camerarium patrem et Joachim Camerarium filium (Groningen 1646); Arcana aseculi decimisexti; Epistolae secretae ad principem Augustum Saxoniae ducem (Halle 1699); Decades tres Epistolarum Langueti, Camerarii, Cratonis et Peucri (Frankfurt 1702). The Vindiciae contra tyrannos, a work by P. du Plessis-Mornay, is sometimes falsely ascribed to him.
