KIEFL, FRANZ XAVER. - Theologian and Catholic writer, b. at Höhenrain (Lower Bavaria) on 17 Oct. 1869, d. at Regensburg on 5 June 1928. Ordained a priest in 1894, he was first engaged in the care of souls, and then (1900) in the teaching of theology. Endowed with a speculative mind and well versed in the history of dogma and of Protestantism, as well as in contemporary philosophy, K. knew how in his numerous writings to touch on the various problems not only of theology, but also of the social order and of pedagogy. Especially well known is his part in the controversies over the theology of H. Schell (v.) and his discussions with the Protestant pedagogue F. W. Foerster.
