LE NOBLETZ, Michel, Venerable. - Popular missionary in Brittany, b. at Kerodern in Plouguerneau (formerly diocese of Léon) on 29 Sept. 1577, d. at Le Conquet on 5 May 1652. Ordained a priest in Paris in 1607, he returned to Brittany and, after an unsuccessful attempt to enter the Dominicans, became a missionary and traveled through almost all of Lower Brittany, preaching, catechizing and adopting as the central theme of his preaching contempt for the world, according to a vision he was said to have had during his studies.
He soon established his apostolate's center at Douarnenez, where he remained for more than 20 years, and where he perfected his effective method of teaching, by means of pictures suited to make a vivid impression on the faithful. For each of the pictures he wrote commentaries rich in psychological insight and of a rigorous spirituality. Forced to abandon Douarnenez because of the lack of understanding of his confreres, he withdrew to Le Conquet, where he lived as a hermit in great poverty and in the most total austerity until his death. Many miracles are attributed to him. Pius X proclaimed the heroicity of his virtues on 14 Dec. 1915.
