LUCCHESIO da POGGIBONSI, blessed. — The first Franciscan tertiary. Born ca. 1181, died 28 April 1260. Having given himself in youth to a worldly life, he married the blessed Bona dei Segni; ever dissatisfied with his condition of life, he first took up the career of arms, becoming a military leader and siding with the

Guelphs; he then turned to trade, until he found peace by embracing the ascetic life.

Having sold all his possessions and distributed them to the poor, he devoted himself to a life of piety and charity towards his neighbour, especially the poor and the sick of the Hospital of Poggibonsi and of the Tuscan Maremma. When, in 1221, s. Francesco established the Third Order, he was among the first to belong to it and is regarded as its firstborn. The blessed Davanzato Davanzati was his disciple. He frequently experienced ecstasies and performed miracles even during his lifetime. In the Franciscan Order his feast is celebrated on 28 April.
