VINCENZO LUPoli. - Canonist, b. at Frattamaggiore near Aversa in 1737, d. in 1810.
While still very young, he went to Naples (1764) and, having failed to obtain the chair of Decretals which he coveted, opened a private law school which became highly renowned. In 1784 he was elected theologian and examiner of the royal clergy, and in 1791 was consecrated bishop of Telese and Cerreto. His works are distinguished by solid doctrine and orthodoxy, although he too, influenced by the spirit of the times, admitted the regium placet. Worthy of special mention are the Iuris ecclesiastici praelectiones (Naples 1777).
