MÁRQUEZ, JUAN. - Ascetical writer and Augustinian theologian, b. in Madrid in 1565, d. in Salamanca in 1621. He took his religious vows on 9 July 1581, studied in Toledo, where in 1588 he obtained the degree of master, and was professor of theology at the University of Salamanca from 1597 to 1600 and from 1603 until his death. He held various offices in the Order, was preacher to King Philip III and consultor of the Holy Office.

He wrote in a classical style: Los dos estados de la espiritual Hierusalem, Medina del Campo 1603; El gobernador cristiano, Salamanca 1612 (ethical-political in content, printed many times); Origen de los frailes ermitaños de s. Agustín, ibid. 1618 (Italian version by P. I. Rampini, Tortona 1620). He also left hagiographical writings and one in defense of the Immaculate Conception. His commentaries on St. Thomas remain unpublished.
