MARTINUS GLOSSATOR. - This name recurs several times in the glosses to the *Decretum Gratiani* and to the *Compilationes antiquae* (cod. Vat. lat. 1367; cod. Halen. Ye. 52, *Ioh. Galensis Apparatus*, *Laurentii Hispanii Apparatus*), and is cited by later glossators and canonists (Ugolino, Pillio, Ostiense), but it has not been possible to identify him.
The identification with Martinus Florentinus must be excluded, since Genzmer has demonstrated the unfoundedness of Riedner’s assertion that Pillio was a pupil of M. G., showing that the latter died between 1158 and 1166, whereas Martinus Florentinus, a canon of Bologna, appears in the acts of the Chapter from 1195 to 1233, is known as a canonist in 1207, and is found among the Bolognese crusaders at Damietta in 1230. For the same reason, the hypothesis of Laspeyres that he is to be identified with Martinus Hispanus (known between 1274 and 1298) also falls, leaving only the possibility that he is Martinus Zamorensis (Gillmann).
