MISLAVSKIJ, SAMUELE SIMBONE ČRIGOREVIČ. - B. at Pološek on 24 May 1731, d. at Kiev on 5 Jan. 1796. In 1742 he entered the ecclesiastical Academy of Kiev as a student. In 1754 he became a monk under the name Samuel, but returned at once to the Academy to teach Latin grammar, poetry, rhetoric and philosophy. In 1761 he was appointed rector of the Academy; but already the following year he was in St. Petersburg, where his oratorical talent won over the tsarina Catherine II. On 28 Dec. 1768 he was elected bishop of Bielgorodsk. After occupying several other sees, on 22 Sept. 1783 he obtained the metropolitan see of Kiev, which he held until his death.
As bishop and metropolitan he carried on a great activity to attract the Uniate Catholics of Volhynia and Podolia to the Russian Church. At the same time he dispensed his constant protection to the Kiev Academy, and applied himself to theological work.
In 1774 he published at Königsberg the Latin treatise against the "Filioque", a work of the Calvinist converted to "orthodoxy" Adam Zoirnikavio; he oversaw the edition of the theological works of Teofane Prokopovič (Leipzig 1782), completing the treatise on the procession of the Holy Spirit and adding vol. III. Later he drew up a compendium of it under the title: Dogmata praecipua fidei orthodoxae catholicae et apostolicae Ecclesiae Orientalis, creditum maxime necessaria pro adipiscenda aeterna salute.
