MISLAVSKIJ, SAMUELE SIMBONE ČRIGOREVIČ. - Born at Pološek on 24 May 1731, died at Kiev on 5 Jan. 1796. In 1742 he entered the Kiev Ecclesiastical Academy as a student. In 1754 he became a monk, taking the name Samuele, but immediately returned to the Academy to teach Latin grammar, poetry, rhetoric, and philo-
sophy. He was appointed rector of the Academy in 1761; but already in the following year he was in Pietroburgo, where his oratorical talent won over Tsarina Caterina II. On 28 Dec. 1768 he was elected bishop of Bielgorodsk. After occupying several other sees, on 22 Sept. 1783 he obtained the metropolitan see of Kiev, which he held until his death.
As bishop and metropolitan, he carried out extensive activity to draw the united Catholics of Volinia and Podolia to the Russian Church. At the same time, he extended his constant protection to the Kiev Academy and devoted himself to theological work.
In 1774 he published at Könisberg the Latin treatise against the « Filioque », the work of the Calvinist converted to “orthodoxy,” Adamo Zoirnikavio; he edited the theological works of Teofane Prokopovič (Lipsia 1782), completing the treatise on the procession of the Holy Spirit and adding vol. III. Later he prepared a compendium of them under the title: Dogmata praecipua fidei orthodoxae catholicae et apostolicae Ecclesiae Orientalis, creditum maxime necessaria pro adipiscenda aeterna salute.
