MONTEINARD, Bruno. - Mystical theologian and apologist, b. at Bormes (Provence) on 7 Feb. 1752, d. at Rome on 14 March 1838. He entered the Minims in 1767, taught theology at Aix and Avignon, and later at Rome in the convent of the Trinity on the Pincian Hill. After the suppression of the convent, he returned to France and, following the Concordat, became honorary canon of Notre Dame in Paris and devoted himself to preaching.
In 1817 he had been called to Rome as superior of the Trinity, with the intention of rebuilding the community. Unfortunately, he was unable to gather a sufficient number of Minims from France, who had been dispersed by the Revolution; and since Italian Minims were not admitted, M. was forced in 1828 to abandon that convent, which for more than three centuries had been a cenacle of illustrious religious. From 1823 to 1829 M. served as “collega,” i.e., general assistant for France. Meanwhile, he preached Lenten sermons for six years at S. Luigi dei Francesi; then he retired to the convent of his confreres at S. Maria della Luce in Trastevere.
