MUNCUNILL Y PARELLADA, JUAN. — Jesuit and theologian, born at Fals (Barcelona) on 10 September 1848, died at Barcelona on 23 January 1928.
He entered the Society of Jesus in 1867 and for many years taught philosophy and theology at various colleges of the Order, in Valencia, Veruela, Tortosa, and Sarrià. Released from teaching in 1912, he devoted himself to preparing his theology lectures for publication. The following works appeared: De Verbi Divini incarnatione (Madrid 1905), which revealed him as a faithful disciple of St. Thomas and Suárez, a writer of great clarity and completeness, and led the work to be judged a most useful textbook for the lecture hall, preaching, and catechesis; it nevertheless lacked a certain breadth, though necessary, in the modern positive section. He remedied this in the works that followed: De vera religione (Barcelona 1909), De Christi Ecclesia (ibid. 1914), De locis theologicis (ibid. 1916); De Deo uno et trino (ibid. 1918); De Deo creatore et de Novissimis (ibid. 1922); De Gratia Christi (ibid. 1927), in which, however, biblical exegesis is not yet developed to the extent customary today. Later the treatise Eximius doctor P. Suarez, fidelis s. Thomae discipulus was published (cf. F. Solà, Un trabajo inédito del p. J. M., in Estudios eclesiásticos, 22 [1948], pp. 509–48).
