ORESTES, Patriarch of Jerusalem. - Greek monk, b. probably in Calabria around the middle of the 9th century, when Sicily had already been conquered by the Arabs and consequently the Greek Basilian monks had fled from there to Calabria. The circumstances of his end are not clear: while some speak of his death in the Babylonian exile in 1012, others, perhaps with greater probability, assign 1005 as the date of his death and Constantinople as the place.
O. wrote three Greek biographies of Calabrian monks: of Saba the Younger, of his father Christopher, and of his brother Macarius. He also wrote hymns, as appears from Codex Corsinianus 366. Having become Greek patriarch of Jerusalem around 984, he enjoyed the confidence of the Greek emperor Basil II and of the caliph al-'Aziz, who had taken one of his sisters as his wife. He was chosen as a peace mediator between the Byzantines and the Arabs and was successful (1000-1001). In Constantinople, where he was staying on the occasion of the peace negotiations, he probably remained for some years, while his brother Arsenius administered the patriarchate of Jerusalem.
