PETER III, Patriarch of Antioch. - Born c. 982 at Antioch, died there in Sept. 1056; he pursued his studies at Constantinople from 1009 onward and embraced a civil career, becoming a superior judge and administrative president. Under the emperor Constantine Monomachus he requested and obtained release from his secular duties in order to become a cleric.

From the office of procurator of the church of the Apostles and of scecophylax of St. Sophia he rose in the spring of 1052 to the patriarchate of Antioch, at the age of 70.

He was distinguished for his zeal and his moderation. At the beginning of his patriarchate P. wrote a letter known as "enthronistic" to Pope Leo IX with the profession of faith. To his hot-tempered colleague, the patriarch Michael Cerularius, he recommended moderation, reminding him that he had seen at Constantinople 40 years earlier the name of the Pope inserted in the diptychs (liturgical commemoration).
