OSOUF, PIERRE-MARIE. - Born on March 26, 1829 at Cérisy-la-Salle (Manche). Ordained a priest on July 11, 1852, he was first secretary to the bishop of Coutances and then entered the Seminary of Foreign Missions of Paris on Aug. 2, 1855.
On June 1, 1856 he departed for the Far East. He subsequently served as procurator in Singapore and as procurator general in Hong Kong until 1875. In that year he was recalled to Paris as director of the Seminary of Foreign Missions. On Dec. 19 of the same year he was appointed titular bishop of Arsinoe and vicar apostolic of northern Japan. The movement that was carrying Japan toward material progress made the apostolate of Msgr. O. difficult, and he devoted himself above all to the development of schools and seminaries. When the hierarchy was established in Japan on June 15, 1891, Msgr. O. became archbishop of Tokyo. He convened two important Synods, in 1890 at Nagasaki and in 1895 at Tokyo. Died in Tokyo on June 27, 1906.
