OSOUF, PIERRE-MARIE. — Born on 26 March 1829 at Cérisy-la-Salle (Manche). Ordained a priest on 11 July 1852, he was first secretary to the bishop of Coutances and then entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris on 2 August 1855.
On 1 June 1856 he departed for the Far East. Subsequently, he was procurator in Singapore and procurator general in Hong Kong until 1875. In that year he was recalled to Paris as director of the Seminary of the Foreign Missions. On 19 December of the same year he was appointed titular bishop of Arsinoe and apostolic vicar of Northern Japan. The movement carrying Japan toward material progress made the apostolate of Mgr. O. difficult; he devoted himself above all to the development of schools and seminaries. When the hierarchy was established in Japan on 15 June 1891, Mgr. O. became archbishop of Tokyo. He convened two important synods, in Nagasaki in 1890 and in Tokyo in 1895. Died in Tokyo on 27 June 1906.
