MUTEL, GUSTAVE-CHARLES-MARIE. - B. March 8, 1854 at Blumeray, diocese of Langres, and d. at Seoul on Jan. 23, 1933. On Oct. 11, 1873 he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris and, ordained a priest on Feb. 24, 1877, he set out on Apr. 5 of the same year for Korea, then subject to violent persecution.

After various attempts he succeeded in entering it on Nov. 12, 1880 and in reaching Seoul, where for five years he lived in hiding. In 1885 he was recalled to Paris and on Sept. 2 was appointed titular bishop of Milo and vicar apostolic of Korea. In 41 years of episcopate the number of Christians increased by 100,000 from 1890 to 1910, in which year the vicariate was divided in two and M. became vicar apostolic of Seoul. On Jan. 11, 1926 Pius IX appointed him archbishop of Raziaria and assistant at the Throne. He knew the Korean language and Chinese literature perfectly.
