MUTEL, GUSTAVE-CHARLES-MARIE. - Born on 8 March 1854 at Blumeray, diocese of Langres, and died at Seoul on 23 January 1933. On 11 October 1873 he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions in Paris and, after being ordained priest on 24 February 1877, he left for Korea on 5 April of the same year, when the country was undergoing violent persecution.
After several attempts, he succeeded in entering on 12 November 1880 and reached Seoul, where for five years he lived in hiding. In 1885 he was recalled to Paris and on 2 September was appointed titular Bishop of Milo and Apostolic Vicar of Korea. During the 41 years of his episcopate the number of Christians increased by 100,000 from 1890 to 1910, when the vicariate was divided into two and M. became Apostolic Vicar of Seoul. On 11 January 1926 Pius XI appointed him Archbishop of Raziaria and Assistant at the Pontifical Throne. He had a perfect command of the Korean language and Chinese literature.
