PUGINIER, PAUL-FRANÇOIS. - Born on July 4, 1835 at Saix (Tarn, France), he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris on July 1, 1854. Ordained a priest on May 29, 1858, he departed on Aug. 29 of the same year for western Tonkin, where he was unable to penetrate until 1862, because of the persecution.

In Nov. 1867 he was appointed coadjutor of Msgr. J. S. Theurel, vicar apostolic of western Tonkin, and consecrated bishop of Mauricastro on Jan. 26, 1868 at Hoang-Nguyen. On Nov. 3 of this year he succeeded Msgr. Theurel. During the various expeditions of Francis Garnier (1872) and of Rivière (1883), P. gave counsels of moderation in order to succeed in pacifying the country. His mission had been struck by two bloody percutions, and he multiplied conversions and increased the native clergy, personally performing more than 120 priestly ordinations. He died at Hanoi on April 25, 1892, and was buried in the church of Ke-so.
