HENRI PERREYRE. — Writer and preacher, born in Paris on 11 April 1831, died there on 26 June 1865.
He entered the Oratory of France in 1853, restored by Fr Grattay, but had to leave after eighteen months on account of poor health; he was ordained priest in 1858; in 1860 he became professor of religion at the Lycée Saint-Louis in Paris; in 1861 he moved to the chair of ecclesiastical history at the Sorbonne. The clarity and depth of his thought, his lively style and his full engagement with the spirit and aspirations of his contemporaries won his works—especially his ascetical writings—great esteem and wide diffusion. Among his works to be noted are: *Méditations sur le chemin de la Croix* (Paris 1859); *Méditations sur les saints Ordres* (ibid. 1860); *La journée des malades* (ibid. 1861); *Entretiens sur l'Église catholique* (ibid. 1861); the collection *Les lettres de Lamennais à des jeunes gens* (ibid. 1862); *Sermons* (ibid. 1863). Published posthumously: *Lettres de l'abbé H. P.* (1850–65) preceded by a biographical notice (ibid. 1879); *Lettres de H. P. à un ami d'enfance, 1847–65* (ibid. 1880); *Études historiques* (ibid. 1875).
