Also known as: Saint Peter of Alexandria, Peter I of Alexandria; Italian: Pietro di Alessandria; Latin: Petrus Alexandrinus

PETER OF ALEXANDRIA, Martyr. - Head of the catechetical school of Alexandria, he became bishop of that city in 300. His flight during the persecution of Diocletian caused the Melitian schism. P. died a martyr in 311.

Of his writings only fragments survive, the most important of which are the 14 penitential canons. The Acts concerning his martyrdom are legendary.
