PRO JUÁREZ, MIGUEL AGUSTÍN. - Jesuit, b. at Concepción del Oro (Zacatecas) on 18 Jan. 1891, d., executed by firing squad, in Messico on 23 Nov. 1927.
Having entered the Society of Jesus in 1911, because of the religious persecution unleashed in Messico, he had to complete all his studies abroad. Returning as a priest to Città di Messico in 1926, he exercised there every possible ministry, in disguise, sought by the government, amid adventures of every kind. Finally, accused of the attack on former president Obregón, he was arrested by order of President Calles and, despite his evident innocence, was condemned to execution by firing squad solely on the basis of a secret order of the military tribunal. Venerated by all as a martyr, after his death his tomb continually receives petitions for graces and letters of thanks for favours obtained. The cause of beatification was introduced on 11 Jan. 1952 (AAS, 44 [1952], pp. 285-87).
