PRO JUAREZ, MIGUEL AGUSTÍN. - Jesuit, b. at Concepción del Oro (Zacatecas) on 18 Jan. 1891, d. by firing squad in Mexico City on 23 Nov. 1927.
Having entered the Society of Jesus in 1911, he was compelled, on account of the religious persecution unleashed in Mexico, to complete all his studies abroad. Returning to Mexico City as a priest in 1926, he exercised all possible ministries in disguise, hunted by the government, amid all manner of adventures. Finally, accused of the attempted assassination of former President Obregón, he was arrested by order of President Calles and, despite his evident innocence, was condemned to death by firing squad on the sole secret order of the military tribunal. Venerated by all as a martyr, after his death his tomb has continuously received requests for graces and letters of thanks for favors obtained. The cause for beatification was introduced on 11 Jan. 1932 (AAS, 44 [1932], pp. 385-87).
