PROCLUS, Saint. - Bishop of Constantinople, d. 446; in 426 he was appointed bishop of Cyzicus, but had to remain in Constantinople because his diocesans refused him.
In 428-30 he rose from the pulpit against the bishop of Constantinople, Nestorius, who railed against the title "Theotokos" attributed to the Madonna. Having become bishop of Constantinople in 434, P. worked to maintain the concord between the Antiochenes and the orthodox obtained in 433, cleared the way for union with the "Ioannites" (extreme devotees of the memory of Chrysostom) and informed the Armenians about the errors contained in the books of Theodore of Mopsuestia. P. introduced the Trisagion into the liturgy and is the author of that formula "One of the Trinity has been crucified" over which people despaired in the 6th century because of the Monophysite sense that was wanted to be given to it.
P., an elegant orator who recalls Chrysostom somewhat, left about forty homilies (the 5th seems rather to be by Atticus) important for their Mariological content, and seven letters among which is the Tomus ad Armenos. Whether P. is also the author of some eighty pseudo-Chrysostomian sermons, as B. Marx maintains, is always doubtful. Feast on 24 Nov.
