PROCOPIUS of GAZA. — A notable representative of the Christian school of Gaza, d. ca. 530; author of extensive biblical commentaries in the form of "catenae" (v.). 163 letters of P. have been preserved (in R. Herder, Epistolographi graeci, Paris 1873, pp. 533–536). Also extant under his name are a panegyric on the Emperor Anastasius (d. 518) and descriptions of works of art. He is probably also the author of some discourses for the festival of roses and of ethopoeiae.
