QUODVULTDEUS

QUODVULTDEUS. – A friend and disciple of St AUGUSTINE, who suggested to him the composition of the book *De haeresibus*. Elected archbishop of Carthage, he was expelled by Gaiseric (Victor of Vita, *Hist. persec. Afric. proc.*, 1, 15), lived in Campania, where he died around 453. With great probability, three sermons *De Symbolo* (PL 40, 637 sq.), a homily *Contra Iudaeos, paganos et arianos* (PL 42, 1117–30), and another *Aversus quinque haereses* (PL 42, 1101 sq.) are attributed to Q. Moreover, four sermons in PL 40, 677–708 and two published by A. Mai in the *Nova Patrum Bibliotheca*, I, part 1 (Rome 1852), pp. 251–82, have also been attributed to him. A better text of the homily *De tempore barbarico*, delivered after the occupation of Carthage, was published by G. Morin, *S. Aurelii Augustini tractatus sive sermones inediti* (Kempten 1917, p. 181 sq.), who also sees in Q. the author of the work *De promissionibus* (v.).
