PROCOPIUS THE GREAT. - Commander of the Hussites, b. c. 1380, d. at Lipany on 30 May 1434.
Ordained a priest, he sided with the most radical party of the Hussites (the Taborites), though he was eager to fuse the best energies of the various branches of the sect. In 1421 he was suspected of being a "Picard" (that is, of denying Transubstantiation); in 1426 (after the death of Ziska in 1424) he was elected commander of the Taborites. Having made several forays into the neighboring regions, he forced the Council of Basel to negotiate with the Hussites and accordingly took a personal part in the legation sent to Basel and was on good terms with the cardinal legate G. Cesarini; he also negotiated with the conciliar legates at Prague, but, dissatisfied, he put an end to the negotiations by besieging the city of Plzeň, regarded as the mainstay of the Catholics. Then, ill-treated by the Taborites, he drew close for a time to the more moderate party of the Praguers, but when these joined with the nobility and with the Catholics to make peace with the Church, P. rallied the radical parties against them (Taborites and Orphan Brethren), and with them he was defeated and killed in the battle of Lipany.
